The first season of B5 showed so much promise . It’s such a shame Michael O’Hare wasn’t well enough to continue.

Interesting read about Amazon’s B5 release:
‘Babylon 5’ is great, so why does it look so bad?
TLDR: B5 was shot for widescreen from the start, but CGI was rendered for SD and they can’t rerender them for widescreen-HD so while they would look dated in any event, the computer graphics are extremely poor. Also: the TNG remaster was very expensive and a sales flop, so don’t count on any other SD sci fi getting the same treatment.

The whole thing was good (well maybe not season 5?)

The Babylon 5 crew did not age well, a large number of them have died:

I could never get behind Boxleitner, but I agree overall it was pretty good, especially G’Kar and Londo.

No he’s not, I meant to get Michael O’hare and apparently grabbed the wrong picture... Oh well, c an’t edit a reply from a couple weeks ago, but given it time and it will be right eventually.

Even on an SD TV, the effects for B5 always looked kinda crap. It clearly didn’t have the same budget as TNG, but that was part of the charm of the show. On the plus side, the ships and what not were easily replicated by fans who knew what 3D animation program the show was using (lightwave) and that got me into 3D.

They were damn good for the time (which is why TNG was using miniatures and painted backgrounds almost exclusively for most of its run), but yeah they pretty dated, even by the end of B5's run. Of course the fact that they were cg did let them do a lot of fancy battle animation well beyond anything Star Trek was doing (though DS9 did have some impressive battle scenes towards the end of its run).
